Where to buy vintage clothing wholesale in the UK: a buyer's checklist
By The Vintage Wholesaler ·
Short answer: in the UK you can buy vintage wholesale from rag houses and graders (by the kilo), from importers selling mixed bales, or from online wholesalers selling graded bundles. Whichever you use, check seven things before you pay: can you see the pieces, the grade, the price a piece, the minimum, choice of brands, the landed cost and real reviews.
The three ways to buy
- By the kilo (rag houses and graders): cheapest per kilo, but unsorted. You pay for every piece you can't sell, and you spend days sorting.
- Mixed bales from importers: sorted by category, but usually sold sight unseen. Quality varies bale to bale.
- Graded bundles online: sorted, graded and priced a piece. Costs more a kilo, less a sellable piece, and you can often see what you're buying.
The checklist
| Check | Why it matters | Our answer |
|---|---|---|
| Can you see the actual pieces? | Photos of a sample bale aren't your bale. Ask for photos of the exact pieces, or buy where every piece is shown. | Yes: every bundle shows the exact pieces you get. |
| What grade, and is it guaranteed? | Ask what share is A grade (ready to sell, no visible flaws) and what happens if it isn't. | Every bundle shows its grade split before you buy. |
| What's the price a piece? | Price by weight (per kg) hides how many pieces you get. Work it out per piece, for the types you want. | Priced a piece, from £2.20, dropping as you buy more. |
| What's the minimum order? | Big minimums tie up cash before you know what sells. | 100 pieces for most bundles, 5 for puffer jackets. |
| Can you choose brands and types? | A random bale is a lottery. Picking types or brands lets you buy for your shop. | Mixed, by type (hoodies, tees, fleece...) or by brand. |
| What does shipping really cost? | Get the landed cost: price plus shipping plus any duty, a piece. | Air 5-7 days, about £1.50 a piece; sea from 1,000 pieces. |
| Who are the reviews from? | Look for independent reviews from resellers, not testimonials on the seller's own page. | Rated 4.5 stars from 7,600+ reviews. |
Red flags
- Only stock photos, or the same bale photo on every listing.
- No grade stated, or "mixed grade" with no split.
- Price only by the kilo, with no idea how many pieces that is.
- No way to pay by card (card payments give you chargeback protection).
- Pressure to pay today for a "last bale".
Duty and shipping into the UK
There's no UK import duty on used clothing, so buying from a supplier abroad needn't cost more. What matters is the shipping: air is fast and priced a kilo, sea is slow but much cheaper on big orders. Always compare the landed cost a piece. Our shipping page shows ours.
